Large Group State Speech 2013
Waukee High School

Note to parents and students:

  • We will be leaving from the high school at 7:45 am.  This will ensure we get to Waukee early enough to check in, find rooms/centers, and check if there were any drops.
  • There will be a warm up room for Musical Theatre.  Not sure which room – they said there will be signs.
  •  State Speech T-shirts will be available for purchase (not sure how much they are – usually they are $10-$15 and I’m not sure what the designs will be)
  • For parents attending, please be aware of the suggested $3 donation to help defray the costs of the contest
  • Above is the schedule for the ROHS students attending State.  Contests can run earlier, so if you are attending, please don’t rely only on the time listed.
  • There will be a limited number of programs available at a cost if you are interested – (they’ll be $1) – I will also have extras of our kids’ schedule times (for free J)
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM, HALLWAYS, OR PERFORMANCE ROOMS. (Waukee’s caps/emphasis J)
  • If you need to get ahold of someone, I will also have my cell phone – that number is 712-309-1058.
  • There will be concessions available all day :)
  • Please show your support by watching your teammates perform!!
  • I will have judge’s comment sheets (as will Braden)
  • If you have to leave with a parent (I prefer you to ride the bus home with the team) they MUST sign off on a form that I will have with me.  That form is from the Activities Department, so it’s a school rule.
  • We will be eating somewhere for supper – not sure where.  Bring money for food.
  • Remember to dress appropriately – NO JEANS while performing.  Also, do not wear anything with ROHS on it.
  • Judges WILL NOT talk with you at State – and there are three judges.  Just so those new won’t be surprised on Saturday :)

Large Group District results

We took 13 events, which included about 34 students to Districts yesterday and everyone did a wonderful job! I'm incredibly proud of all of them. I even had several coaches make positive comments about our numbers and our performers.

If the students receive a "one" rating they advance to the state competition. They will also be performing for the public at the high school media center on Friday January 25. The students headed to state, which will be in Waukee on Saturday February 2, are:

1. Laura Butz and Donnie Torbett in Musical Theatre
2. Brad Black and Travis Fournier in Ensemble Acting
3. Maggie Bennett and Bevin Griffen in Musical Theatre
4. Brad Black, Danielle Gilliland, Morgan Walford and Erica Sherman in Group Improv
5. Bevin Griffen and Eva Woods in Ensemble Acting
6. Ashley Brower, Angela Mahoney and Maysen Havener in Group Improv
7. Kaylin Carlson, Brenna Craig, Dakota Girouex and Cassie Vrabel in Readers Theatre
8. Angelica Cerda, Ellen Fellers, Maggie Bennett and Laura Butz in Group Improv
9. Donnie Torbett, Jared Sherman, Madison Gilbert and Grace Blomstedt in Group Improv

The other groups did really well and received a "two" rating:

1. Angelica Cerda and Ellen Fellers in Ensemble Acting
2. DJ Reich, NyLea Pafford, Teanna Pafford, Sam Warren, Akaela Johnson, Jeannie Kort and Charlie Lassen in Readers Theatre
3. Jessa Davis and Leatha Bennett in Ensemble Acting
4. Nathan Guffey, Nick Black, Jared Sherman and Gil Cooper in Short Film

They all did a terrific job and represented Red Oak well. I'm incredibly proud of each and every one of them!

Large Group District Schedule

There will be a meeting in seminar for the kids to give them information about Districts.  They will be given a copy of this schedule as well as information on what to do and what not to do on Saturday.  I've included that list at the end of this schedule so that parents can see it (in case the paper does not make it home) :)

Large Group Districts Saturday January 19

  • Bus leaves at 7:00 – BE ON TIME!!!!  We have a group, which needs to warm up, who performs at 8:30; we also have a group that performs at 8:40.  We need to be there early to find centers.
  • We will be at the high school in Glenwood.  Please make sure your parents and any other people who may be coming to watch know that.
  • Bring money for food – there is a concession stand at the school.  I do not know what the plan is for supper at this point.
  • Please remember that the attached schedule is TENTATIVE!  If there are drops or something goes faster (if one of the performers doesn’t use the entire “maximum” time, for example) the times would be incorrect.  Be at the center EARLY.  Be sure to inform your parents and anyone else coming to watch they should be early!!
  • NO PHOTOGRAPHING OR VIDEOTAPING ALLOWED WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT FROM THE STATE OFFICE.  STUDENTS AND TEAM COULD BE DISQUALIFIED IF THAT OCCURS!!  We have NEVER been allowed to photograph or videotape a performance in speech.
  • Remember to turn off all cell phones when you are in the performance rooms.  If at all possible, have someone else hold your phone.  Don’t perform with it in your pocket.
  • Please help keep noise low in the hallways.  Make me proud J I know I have the best kids in the State, show it to everyone else! J
  • Do not plan on leaving with parents unless there is a prior commitment.  Your parent MUST sign a paper with me beforehand.  It’s important to stay to encourage and support your teammates.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend if at all possible.  There is a suggested $3 entrance fee for non-competitors.
  • I will have your comment sheets and black paper.  If your script is NOT on black paper already, see me ASAP!
  • Wear nice clothes ABSOLUTELY NO JEANS!!!!  Please think about what event you are in – if you’re in improv, don’t wear a skirt or dress and heels (girls).
  • Make sure your hair is away from your face.  Judges need to see facial expressions!  I will have bobby pins and hair spray if needed.
