WELCOME TO THE 2010-2011 SEASON!!!

Although I'm still focused on the Fall Play for the rest of this week, we have already had an informational meeting in the middle of October to see how many students were interested in Large Group Speech. Imagine my surprise when 50 (yep, FIFTY) students showed up!! Not to mention the EIGHTEEN freshmen!!!! :)

I'm extremely excited about this year's season! It should be a terrific one!

* Please ask your student about their contract that needs to be signed and returned this week (Wednesday November 3). They must turn that in in order to participate this year.

* Practices will begin the week of November 8. Each group MUST practice at least 4 times in order to be eligible to compete at Districts. At this point there will be a competition for several events to determine the three groups going to Districts.

Please continue to check back to see updates. More will be added as we go along. On the left-hand side of the page are the new contest dates for this year - both Large Group and Individual. Please make sure they are put on your calendar!!! :)

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me! Thanks!

School Website is Updated

My part of the school website is updated...with list of qualifiers and with pictures. Click on either Large Group Speech 2009-2010 or Individual Speech 2009-2010 (or both) :) at this address:

http://redoakia.beta.fesdev.org/vnews/display.v/SEC/High%20School%20%289-12%29|Language%20Arts%3E%3EMrs.%20Horn

Apparently the school is switching over to a new server or program or something, so the address is different, but as of tonight, I was still able to just type in www.redoakschooldistrict.com and it went to the home page correctly. High School tab on the left, Language Arts and then Mrs. Horn -- that's another way to get there :)

Don't forget, I need a head-count by May 1st for the banquet!!! Thanks!!!!!

End of the Year Banquet

We will have our first annual End of the Year Speech/Drama Banquet on Sunday, May 16th at 4:00 in the High School Cafeteria. The kids have an invitation they are to bring home to show parents. At the banquet I will be presenting Speech and Drama letters as well as certificates from the season.

We will be purchasing the main course and are asking for $2.00 per person attending the banquet to help pay for that. If you have a daughter in speech/drama, they are to bring a side dish to share. If you have a son in speech/drama, they are to bring a dessert to share. **If you have two children in speech/drama, please just choose one thing to bring (unless you want to do both!)** I will provide table settings and drinks. Please RSVP to hornl@roschools.com by MAY 1st so that I can get a head-count! Thanks!! All family members are invited too :)

To help me with something I am working on for the banquet, I am asking for any pictures you may have of Large Group and/or Individual speech kids. I have the group shots and I have Fall Play pictures, but I would appreciate any other pictures you may have. Please email those to me at rohsspeech@gmail.com (I've had issues with getting attachments through the school email) by April 23rd or if it's easier for you to burn the pictures to a disc that will work too.

Again,
* Pictures needed by April 23 (rohsspeech@gmail.com)
* RSVP needed by May 1 for count (hornl@roschools.com)
* $2.00 per person (if you have three family members coming that would be $6.00) ASAP -- if you need to write a check, please make the check out to Laura Horn since I will be getting the food
* Girls = side dish; Boys = dessert

Thanks so much!!!

Planning for Next Year

The IHSSA sent out the dates for next year. We don't know places yet, but I'll post that information as soon as it's available (might be next school year before we know). Please get these on your calendars so that you are aware of them now :)

Large Group Districts - January 22, 2011
Large Group State - February 5, 2011
Large Group All-State - February 19, 2011 at Iowa State, Ames
Individual Districts - February 26, 2011
Individual State - March 12, 2011 **DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH OUR SPRING BREAK**
Individual All-State - March 28, 2011 at UNI, Cedar Falls **END OF OUR SPRING BREAK**

I'm planning on a performance night again next year, but I'm not sure when that will be - I still need to discuss it and finalize it with Mrs. Spangenberg. It might also depend on the numbers next year. Once I know I will post that information and it will also be in the handbook next year for the kids and the parents' meeting.

CALLING FOR PICTURES -- AGAIN :)

If any of you have ANY pictures from Large Group or Individual Speech, please send them to me as I would like to use them for a project I'm going to do for our end of the year banquet. We don't know when we're going to do the banquet yet -- it'll be where we give out letter-winners and everything. I will be sending out more information as soon as things are decided. But I'd love the pictures ASAP so that I can get the project done -- the end of the year will be here before we know it! YIKES!!! Thanks so much!!!!

You can email them to my school address: hornl@roschools.com. Sometimes that email address doesn't like attachments, so if you would also send them to the email I set up for this blog that'd be great! That email address is rohsspeech@gmail.com.

Thanks again! :)

Information about Saturday March 13
(yes, that’s TOMORROW!!!!)

* Vans leave school at 7:00 am. We have several students going right away and we’ve never been to Glenwood’s school before, so we need to make sure we have time to find centers.
* Schedules were already handed out – please let parents and others who may be coming to watch that our school code is 313.
* Bring money for any food – including lunch. We will be eating at the school. We may be going somewhere after everyone is done – it is the state speech experience :)
* I do not know yet when we will be leaving. We have to wait until the last person’s ratings are posted for me to get the comment sheets.
* Do not plan on leaving with parents unless there is a prior commitment. You need to let me know ahead of time, please. There are papers you have to have your parent sign. It’s important to stay to encourage and support your teammates.
* Parents are encouraged to attend if at all possible. There is a suggested $3 entrance fee for non-competitors.
* Please remember there is to be ABSOLUTELY NO cameras in the performance rooms. THE STATE OFFICE DOES NOT ALLOW PHOTOGRAPHS OR VIDEO TO BE TAKEN.
* I will have your comment sheets and black paper. If you need to have anything fixed before Saturday, see me now! :)

THANK YOU!!!

I do want to give everyone a huge THANK YOU for all the support the team received on Monday's Public Performance night. It was awesome to see so many people in the audience and I know it meant a lot to the kids as well. I am so very proud of all the kids and I loved the opportunity to "show them off" :) They've worked hard and deserve the recognition they are receiving. Thank you again for all the support you've shown!!!

Large Group State Speech results

Long day in Ankeny, but a really great day in Ankeny :) I want to say how proud I am of each and every group for their hard work and their performances at State. Remember, you guys are part of Red Oak history -- never before have we taken that many groups and that many kids to State! :) That, in and of itself, is something to be very proud of. You all made me proud to be your coach yesterday (not that that's a new thing).

Groups with straight 2s were:
* Group Improv - Codie, Ali and Casey
* Readers Theater - Brad, Brandy, Devin and Kathryn
* Ensemble - Codie, Katherine, Kelsey and Sarah

Groups with straight 1s were:
* Group Improv - Dylan, Michelle, Lauren and Sarah
* Group Improv - Brittany, Andrea, Stephanie and Kristi

Finally, a HUGE "Thank You" to all the parents who helped with doughnuts, milk and juice in the morning and sack lunches and dessert during the day. It was GREATLY appreciated!!!

STATE LARGE GROUP - WEATHER

At this point in time, we are still leaving at 8:00 am. LOOKING AT THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WEBSITE, ALL ROADS WE WOULD TRAVEL ARE LISTED AS NORMAL CONDITIONS FOR THE SEASON. I will be meeting with Mr. Sherman after school today to discuss if we need to change anything. I have been checking the Ankeny web site and nothing is posted at this time. I did email Ankeny's speech coach to see what the weather was like up that direction so I could pass along that information. I will add that to the blog once I get an email reply back. Please be assured that we will be taking the weather into consideration once we get all the information we can.

STATE SCHEDULE -- Time leaving revised

We are school 61 (high school) and 62 (freshmen). Here’s the schedule:

Center 2 11:30 am Codie, Ali, and Casey
Center 12 2:00 pm “Accused of Comedy” Reader’s Theater
Center 4 4:00 pm “Mrs. Perry’s Test” Ensemble
Center 2 5:10 pm Dylan, Michelle, Lauren, and Sarah
Center 11 5:30 pm Stephanie, Andrea, Kristi and Brittany

Because it's so late, I'm thinking I'll plan on just giving them an addressed envelope to send our comment sheets to us. However, if the groups want to stay, please let me know! At this point, it's looking like we'd be leaving at 8:00 so that we're sure we get there in plenty of time for the first group (since the time is approximate). I'll be posting more information (and giving info to the kids) as soon as it's finalized.

Pictures PLEASE!!!!

Anyone who took pictures during Districts, please email them to me at hornl@roschools.com. I like to compile pictures of the season and I usually don't get a chance to take pictures. If you take pictures at State or during the Individual season as well I'd love to get copies! :) Thanks!!!

Individual Speech Information

All students who want to compete for Individual Speech MUST see me by Friday, January 29th. After Friday it will be too late to be added to the team. Even if you signed up earlier, you MUST see me before Friday. I have to register Individuals by February 10 (yep, 4 days after State Large Group) and in order to be registered, students MUST rehearse with me at least TWICE PER EVENT prior to that February 10 deadline. Only those students returning their signed contract AND rehearsing at least twice will be registered. If there are events that will require try-outs (too many entered in the event to take to Districts) times for try-outs will be decided shortly after February 10.

District Large Group Results

There were 25 students competing at Districts in 11 groups. Five groups (17 students) have qualified for the State competition, which will be held on February 6, 2010 in Ankeny. The five groups who qualified for State were:

Group Improv - Dylan, Michelle, Lauren, and Sarah
Group Improv - Brittany, Andrea, Stephanie and Kristi
Group Improv - Allison, Codie, and Casey
Ensemble - Sarah, Katherine, Codie and Kelsey
Readers Theater 9th grade - Brad, Brandy, Devin and Kathryn

The other groups who competed today did a fantastic job. They were:

Readers Theater - Allison, Dylan, Lauren, Matt, Rachael and Hollie
Ensemble - Michelle and Jordan
Radio Broadcasting - Brittany, Andrea, Stephanie and Kristi
TV News - Allison and Beau
Group Improv 9th grade - Brandy and Kathryn
Group Improv 9th grade - Bevin and Genevieve

They all did a terrific job and I'm incredibly proud of them. This is the largest number of students competing in the five years I've taught at ROHS, as well as the largest number of students qualified for State since I've been coach here! We have an amazing team!!!!

Group Improv Competing at Districts:

In no particular order, the groups who are going to be competing at Districts are:

Brittany, Andrea, Stephanie, and Kristi

Dylan, Michelle, Lauren, and Sarah

Allison, Codie, and Casey

Please know that while I'm thrilled with how many kids I have out for Large Group the bad thing about that is that not all teams get to compete. I hate the fact I have to say to some they can't compete at Districts. Please know that EVERYONE is part of the team, competing or not, and EVERYONE can go Saturday. If you aren't competing and will NOT be attending, please tell me so that I have an accurate attendance sheet.

Schedules will be handed out tomorrow at the speech meeting during seminar.

District Schedule FINALIZED

Here's the District Schedule. I would like to state (and I will remind the kids directly) that even if they end up not competing in an event at Districts, they are still part of the team and I'd like them to go on Saturday!

Please go watch your teammates unless you are competing. Do not just stay in the gym (or wherever the “holding area” will be). I will NOT be able to make everyone’s performances. I will go to seniors first and get to as many overall as possible, but (as you can see) many of the times overlap or are so close together that it’s impossible (until someone shows me how to be in more than one place at once :).

Large Group District Speech Information

Districts are Saturday, January 23rd. I'm in the process of getting the schedule together -- we have everything from Clarinda at this point, but I am waiting to hand out the schedule to students until after try-outs for Group Improv. I can say our first group performs at 8:00 am and our last group performs at 2:00 pm. As soon as that 2:00 round is done and those results are posted I'll be able to pick up comment sheets from the office, finalize any entry cards for those who qualify for State, and then we'll be able to leave. Please be aware that the times are always subject to change.

There are several things I want students and parents to remember about Districts:
  1. The bus leaves at 7 AM sharp -- please be on time!
  2. All students are expected to ride the bus to and from Districts (the only ones at this point who have permission to leave early are the wrestling cheerleaders and the basketball players). We are a team and I believe it's important for all members to stay and support their teammates in later performances.
  3. Please bring money for lunch. We will be eating at the high school in Clarinda for lunch. They will have concessions available.
  4. Students should dress in "game day" attire -- NO JEANS -- nice pants, nice shirt, nice shoes. NOTHING with Red Oak should be on clothes when performing. That will cause a disqualification from the judges. Spectators should refrain from wearing anything with Red Oak on it as well.
  5. Please make sure you have everything you need for your event. If you're supposed to have your script, make sure you have your script. I will have black paper for Reader's Theater.
  6. No cell phones will be allowed in the hallways (that comes from Clarinda) and definitely no cell phones in the performance rooms.
  7. Parents and other family members are more than welcome to come watch. The State Office has set a $3.00 charge for non-performers.
  8. The State Office also does not allow any recording of performances -- video or still photos. Please don't bring cameras into the performance rooms.
  9. Each room will have the list of performers outside the room. CHECK that list for any drops because that could change your performing time!!
I'm looking forward to contest. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. This will be the largest group I have ever taken to a contest, and will work hard to make sure all students know what to do and where to go, but please be aware that I will be pulled in many different directions that day! :)
